Excel to CSV

Convert an Excel workbook (.xlsx, .xls, .ods) to UTF-8 CSV, choosing the sheet and the delimiter (comma, semicolon or tab).

About Excel to CSV

Many systems only accept CSV: an import into WooCommerce, Mailchimp, a Python script or a database loader will reject an .xlsx workbook. Saving as CSV from Excel itself creates other problems, because Excel picks the separator from your regional settings and writes a legacy encoding that turns accents into question marks elsewhere. This tool reads the workbook in the browser and produces a clean UTF-8 CSV from the sheet you choose, with the separator you choose.

Drop the .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm or .ods file on the upload area, pick the sheet and separator, and download or copy the result. The workbook is parsed with the SheetJS library inside your browser, so payroll, customer and pricing sheets never leave your computer.

How to use Excel to CSV step by step

  1. Drag your Excel file onto the green upload area or click it to choose the file. The first sheet is converted immediately and shown in the result box.
  2. If the workbook has several sheets, select the one you need in "Sheet to convert". Each change re-generates the CSV.
  3. Choose the CSV delimiter: comma for most programs and APIs, semicolon for Excel in Spanish, French or German regional settings, tab or pipe for special cases.
  4. Leave "UTF-8 with BOM" checked if the CSV will be opened in Excel again; uncheck it for scripts and databases that do not expect a byte order mark.
  5. Click "Download CSV" or "Copy". With multi-sheet workbooks a second button downloads every sheet as its own CSV file.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Excel show accents as strange characters when I open a CSV?

Excel assumes a CSV uses the legacy Windows encoding unless the file starts with a UTF-8 byte order mark. This converter adds that BOM by default, so names with accents, ñ or Vietnamese and Thai characters open correctly in Excel on both Windows and macOS.

Should I use a comma or a semicolon as separator?

Use a comma when the CSV goes to a program, API, database or a spreadsheet in an English locale. Use a semicolon when someone will double-click the file in Excel with Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese regional settings, where the comma is the decimal separator.

Can I convert an .xls or .ods file, not just .xlsx?

Yes. The reader handles the classic binary .xls format from Excel 97-2003, macro-enabled .xlsm workbooks, OpenDocument .ods from LibreOffice, and .xlsx. Password-protected workbooks cannot be read.

What happens with multiple sheets?

You pick one sheet from a dropdown and the CSV is generated from it. If the workbook has more than one sheet, an extra button downloads all of them at once, one CSV per sheet named file-sheet.csv.

Is the Excel file uploaded anywhere?

No. The workbook is parsed entirely by JavaScript in your browser tab. There is no upload, no server-side processing and no copy kept, which makes the tool suitable for confidential financial or HR data.
