What is a CSV file?

A CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file is a plain text format that stores tabular data. Each line represents a row of data, and each value within that row is separated by a comma. It's a universally compatible format, ideal for exchanging data between different applications like Excel, Google Sheets, or databases.

CSV Example

id,product,price,stock
1,Laptop,1200,50
2,Smartphone,800,150
3,Headphones,150,300

How to create a CSV file step by step

Creating a CSV file should not require opening Excel, fighting with Save As and discovering afterwards that the file uses semicolons, that ZIP codes lost their leading zero or that accents came out wrong. CSV Creator is a free online CSV maker: type the data in a table (or paste it as text), name the file and download a clean comma-separated UTF-8 .csv, ready to import into any program, database or online shop.

Everything happens in your browser: the data is never uploaded to a server, there is no sign-up and no usage limit. If you then need to convert that CSV to Excel, JSON, SQL or XML, edit it as a table or split it into parts, there are 34 more tools on this page, in five languages.

  1. Type the file name in "File name" (without extension; .csv is added automatically).
  2. Type the data in the table: the first row holds the column names and every following row is a record. Use "Row" and "Column" to add space, or switch to "Text" to paste comma-separated lines; values that contain a comma are quoted automatically.
  3. Check that every row has the same number of values as the header; it is the most common import error.
  4. Click "Download CSV". The file is saved to your computer encoded in UTF-8 and opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or any importer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to make a CSV file?

Use an online CSV maker like this one: type the column names in the first row of the table, fill in one record per row and click Download CSV. The file is comma-separated and UTF-8, so it imports cleanly into Excel, Google Sheets, databases and online shops, and nothing is uploaded to a server.

What is a CSV file?

CSV stands for comma-separated values. It is a plain-text file where each line is a row and the values in each row are separated by commas. It has no formatting, formulas or sheets, only data, which is why every program understands it, from Excel to any database or programming language.

How do I create a CSV file without Excel?

Type or paste the data in the text box on this page, with the column names on the first line and the values separated by commas, and click "Download CSV". Any text editor (Notepad, TextEdit) also works if you save with the .csv extension, but here the file is already UTF-8 with no encoding surprises.

How do I create a CSV from Excel or Google Sheets?

In Excel: File > Save As > "CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)". In Google Sheets: File > Download > "Comma Separated Values (.csv)". Note that Excel in many European locales saves with semicolons if you pick the plain "CSV (Comma delimited)" option; if you need real commas, choose the UTF-8 option or run the file through the Excel to CSV tool on this site.

Why does Excel open my CSV in a single column?

Because Excel uses the list separator of the Windows regional settings, which is the semicolon in Spain, France, Germany and many other countries, while your file uses commas. Fixes: open it through Data > From Text/CSV choosing the comma as delimiter, convert the file to semicolons with CSV to Delimited, or generate an .xlsx directly with CSV to Excel.

What is the difference between CSV and Excel (XLSX)?

CSV is plain text: a single table, no data types, no formatting or formulas, and very small. XLSX is the Excel workbook format: several sheets, typed cells (number, date, text), styles, formulas and charts. CSV is the universal format for exchanging data between programs; XLSX is for working and presenting inside Excel.

Is it free and what happens to my data?

It is free, with no sign-up and no row limit. All processing is done with JavaScript in your browser: the data you paste is never sent to csvcreator.com or any third party, so you can use it with customer lists, payroll or financial data.
