Open and browse CSV files too big for Excel, even several gigabytes.
About Large CSV File Viewer
Excel stops at 1,048,576 rows, and text editors freeze or crash on CSV exports of a few hundred megabytes. Database dumps, server logs, transaction histories and analytics exports regularly go past both limits. This viewer opens CSV files of several gigabytes in a normal browser tab: it reads the file from your disk in 4 MB pieces, counts the rows and remembers where every block of 1,000 rows starts, so you can jump to row 5,000,000 as fast as to row 1.
Once the file is indexed you can page through it, jump to any row number, search every column of the whole file, export any range of rows as a new CSV, or split the file into parts that each fit in Excel. Nothing is uploaded: the file never leaves your computer, which matters when the export contains customer, payroll or financial data.
How to use Large CSV File Viewer step by step
Drag the CSV file onto the upload area or click it to pick the file. CSV, TSV and TXT files are supported, with any delimiter.
Wait for the progress bar while the file is indexed. A 1 GB file takes around ten seconds on a recent laptop. The row count, column count, delimiter and encoding appear when it finishes.
Use the arrows to move 100 rows at a time, or type a row number in "Go to row" to jump straight there.
Type a word, ID or email in "Search the whole file" to list the matching rows. Click a result to open that part of the file.
To get a smaller file, enter a range in "Export a range of rows" and download it, or click "Split into Excel-sized files" if the file has more rows than Excel allows.
100% free and online: no payments, no software or extensions to install.
Privacy-first: processing happens in your browser, your data never leaves your device.
No sign-up: paste your data and get the result in one click.
Fast and reliable: handle small or large files in seconds, ready for Excel and other tools.
Common use cases
Check what is inside a multi-gigabyte database export before importing it, without installing a database or a special editor.
Find the rows for one customer, order ID or email in a huge transaction log by searching the whole file.
Cut a sample of the first 10,000 rows to share with a colleague or to test an import script.
Split a CSV with millions of rows into parts that open in Excel or Google Sheets, each with the header row repeated.
Inspect a data dump from Shopify, Stripe, Salesforce or Google Analytics that Excel refuses to open completely.
Limits and tips
Rows are counted as records, so a quoted field that contains line breaks still counts as a single row, exactly as a CSV parser would read it.
Exports and splits copy the original bytes, so they keep the file's encoding, delimiter and quoting untouched and are fast even for millions of rows.
Google Sheets has its own limit of 10 million cells, so for wide files you may need smaller parts than Excel's 1,048,576 rows: export ranges of the size you need.
Search is case-insensitive and looks at every column. It stops after 1,000 matches to stay fast; search for something more specific if you hit the limit.
If accents look wrong, the file was probably saved by Excel on Windows: the viewer detects Windows-1252 automatically from the first megabyte.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a CSV file that is too large for Excel?
Excel can only load 1,048,576 rows per sheet and drops everything after that. Open the file in this viewer instead: it reads the file in pieces, so it handles tens of millions of rows. If you need the data in Excel, use "Split into Excel-sized files" to get parts of up to 1,048,575 rows plus the header, and open each part in Excel.
How big a file can it open?
The viewer only keeps the current page and a small index in memory, so the limit is your disk, not your RAM. Files of 1 to 5 GB work in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Indexing runs at roughly 100 MB per second on a recent laptop, so a 1 GB file is ready in about ten seconds.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The browser reads the file directly from your disk with the File API. There is no upload, no server-side processing and nothing is stored, so the tool works with confidential exports and even offline once the page has loaded.
Can I edit the data in a large CSV?
This viewer is read-only so that it stays fast on huge files. Export the range you need and edit it in the CSV editor, or use Split CSV, Merge CSV and Remove Duplicates to reshape the file.
Why does the row count differ from the number of lines in the file?
A field wrapped in quotes can contain line breaks, for example an address or a comment. A CSV parser treats that as one row, and so does this viewer, while tools like wc -l count every physical line.
