Sample CSV files to download for free

CSV files ready to download for testing, tutorials, classes and demos. There are realistic business datasets (customers, products, orders, employees, sales), capital-city coordinates for maps and, above all, files built to stress an importer or a parser: commas and line breaks inside quotes, semicolons with decimal commas, Excel's Windows-1252 encoding, leading zeros, missing values, mixed date formats and a 100,000-row file.

All data is fictitious: emails use the reserved example.com, example.org and example.net domains, and phone numbers are in ranges reserved for fiction. You can use the files freely, including in commercial projects. Every file can be opened in the site's CSV viewer without downloading it.

Large Sample CSV Files — Download sample CSV files with 1,000 to 5 million rows of realistic data, generated in your browser.

License: fictitious data released into the public domain (CC0). Use it however you like.

How to use these files

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these CSV files in commercial projects?

Yes. The data is fictitious and released into the public domain (CC0): you can copy, modify and use it in any project, including paid courses and product demos, without attribution.

Is the data real?

No. Names, emails, phone numbers, orders and salaries are randomly generated. Emails use the reserved example.com, example.org and example.net domains and phone numbers are in ranges reserved for fiction, so they belong to nobody. Only the capital-city coordinates are real data.

Which file should I use to test a CSV importer?

Start with edge-cases-quotes-newlines.csv, which combines commas, quotes and line breaks inside fields. Then try excel-windows-1252-semicolon.csv for encoding and semicolons, leading-zeros-codes.csv for leading zeros and customers-100000.csv for performance.

Why does the Windows-1252 file show strange characters in some programs?

Because it is deliberately encoded the way Excel on Windows saves CSV, not as UTF-8. A program that assumes UTF-8 will display accents incorrectly. That is exactly what makes it useful for checking whether your tool detects the encoding; this site's CSV viewer does it automatically.

How do I generate a test CSV with my own columns?

Use the Generate Test Data tool: define the fields (name, email, UUID, number, date, city...) and the number of rows, and download the CSV or JSON straight away.
