CSV Viewer and Editor

Open, search, sort and edit CSV files in a table; export to CSV, Excel or JSON.

About CSV Viewer and Editor

Double-clicking a CSV in Excel is the quickest way to damage it: ZIP codes lose their leading zero, codes turn into dates and the whole file lands in one column if the separator does not match your regional settings. This viewer opens the file as it really is, in a table where every cell is shown exactly as written, and lets you search, sort and edit it before saving it back as CSV, Excel or JSON.

Drop the file on the page or open it from your computer. It is read by JavaScript in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and the table only renders the rows on screen, which keeps it fast with 100,000 rows or more.

How to use CSV Viewer and Editor step by step

  1. Drag your .csv, .tsv, .txt or .xlsx file onto the blue area, or click "Open file". You can also click "Paste text" and paste CSV content.
  2. Check the line under the toolbar: it shows rows, columns, the detected separator and the encoding. Files saved by Excel on Windows (Windows-1252) are detected and decoded so accents display correctly.
  3. Use the search box to filter rows, click a column header to sort it (click again to reverse), and double-click a header to rename it.
  4. Click any cell to edit it. Enter moves down, Tab moves right, Esc cancels. Hover a row number or a header to delete that row or column.
  5. Choose the export separator (comma, or semicolon for European Excel), optionally add a UTF-8 BOM, and download as CSV, Excel (.xlsx) or JSON.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a CSV file online without Excel?

Drop the file on this page or click Open file. It is displayed in a table straight away, with the separator and encoding detected automatically. Nothing is installed and the file is not uploaded: it is read by your browser.

Why does my CSV look fine here but broken in Excel?

Excel applies your regional settings when it opens a CSV: it may expect semicolons instead of commas, read UTF-8 accents as legacy Windows characters and turn codes into numbers or dates. This viewer shows the raw values without interpreting them.

Can it open large CSV files?

Yes. The table only draws the rows visible on screen, so a 100,000-row file loads, scrolls, searches and sorts smoothly. The practical limit is your browser's memory.

Does it support semicolon and tab separated files?

Yes. The separator is detected from the first lines (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe), and you can choose a different one when exporting.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Reading, editing and exporting all happen with JavaScript in your browser tab. The data never reaches csvcreator.com or any third party.
